Apps & integrations

your shopify store is probably over-apped

apps solve problems quickly. they also quietly increase operational complexity.

Apps are one of Shopify’s biggest strengths.

They’re also one of the easiest ways to create operational complexity.

Most stores don’t suffer from too few apps.

They suffer from too many overlapping systems.

Every App Adds Operational Surface Area

When merchants install an app, they’re not just adding functionality.

They’re adding:

  • scripts
  • dependencies
  • support relationships
  • frontend logic
  • operational ownership

One app is manageable.

Twenty apps becomes infrastructure.

That’s usually where problems start appearing.

Storefront Complexity Compounds Quietly

A lot of ecommerce teams don’t notice operational friction until the storefront already feels slow.

Not just technically slow.

Operationally slow.

Campaigns take longer. Debugging becomes harder. Merchants stop trusting storefront behavior. Developers become scared to remove anything.

And usually nobody fully understands which systems control what anymore.

That’s the hidden cost of app overload.

Apps Should Support Strategy — Not Replace It

Good ecommerce teams treat apps like infrastructure decisions.

Not quick experiments.

Before adding an app, the important questions usually aren’t:

  • how fast can we install this?
  • does it look good in the demo?

The better questions are:

  • who owns this long-term?
  • what happens if we remove it later?
  • does this overlap with existing functionality?
  • how much frontend dependency does this introduce?

Because every app has operational cost.

Even when the subscription looks small.

Final Thought

Apps aren’t bad.

Shopify’s ecosystem is one of the reasons the platform scales so well commercially.

But unmanaged app ecosystems quietly become one of the biggest operational problems in ecommerce.
